Urban League of Greater New Orleans Young Professionals teams up with EZ Parker and Dillard University to provide the Young Professionals University

New Orleans, LA. – In a continuing effort to engage the most challenged of youth, The Urban League of Greater New Orleans Young Professionals (the "Young Professionals"), an auxiliary of the Urban League of Greater New Orleans, is joining with partners EZ Parker and Dillard University, to implement its Young Professionals University program. The Young Professionals and its partners, along with local civic and community leaders will gather to launch Young Professionals University on Thursday, October 30, 2008, 5:00 p.m., at the Urban League Headquarters located at 2322 Canal Street.

The program is a leadership and professional development program for historically underserved, underprivileged and/or disadvantaged high school students. "Today’s typical high school student is ill-equipped to break persistent cycles of disparity," says Jade Brown Russell, President of the Young Professionals. “This initiative is intended for youth who strive to break those cycles of disparity, make the transition into productive adulthood, and become the positive role models our communities so critically need.”

The purpose of this initiative is to fill the gaps, which exist between a student's formal school education and parental guidance, by empowering them with the tools and resources they need to become successful. The Young Professionals will utilize the input of its diverse membership and partner organizations to achieve this goal. The Urban League of Greater New Orleans, operating in New Orleans since 1938, is a non-profit, non-partisan, community based organization dedicated to empowering communities and changing lives. Through advocacy and direct service, the League serves upwards of 5,000 clients annually in education, childcare, business development and employment and training programs. The League’s founding mission to assist clients to become self sufficient remains unchanged. The Urban League is a participating agency of the United Way for the Greater New Orleans area.

The Urban League of Greater New Orleans Young Professionals, is an auxiliary of the Urban League of Greater New Orleans and is New Orleans' young professionals organization of choice for its distinctive capacity and commitment in providing activities that are characterized by excellence in community service, fundraising, and dedication to the renewal, development and redevelopment of its diverse members to empower communities and change lives through consistent involvement in the Urban League movement, which includes: (1) Education and Youth Empowerment; (2) Economic Empowerment; (3) Health and Quality of Life Empowerment; (4) Civic Engagement and Leadership Empowerment; and (5) Civil Rights and Racial Justice Empowerment.
