ORLEANS PARISH SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATE PUBLIC FORUM
We would like to invite you to a very important event that will help to shape the future of public education in New Orleans.
The League of Women Voters of New Orleans, the Urban League of Greater New Orleans, and the Scott S. Cowen Institute for Public Education Initiatives at Tulane University would like to invite you to participate in a forum on Tuesday, September 23.
The purpose of the forum is to inform voters on each candidate’s positions and to help voters understand the role of the Orleans Parish School Board. During the forum, candidates will answer specific questions generated by the three sponsoring organizations.
What: A panel consisting of Orleans Parish School Board candidates will be asked questions by the sponsoring organizations. Candidates will be allowed a one minute closing statement and there will be an open question and answer period.
When and Where: Tuesday, September 23, 2008 from 6:30-8:00PM at the Urban League of Greater New Orleans offices at 2322 Canal Street, New Orleans. Street parking is available and directions are below. The doors will open at 6:00PM and you will have an opportunity at that time to meet your candidates.
Why: It is important for the community to hear your positions on important issues affecting the school board in order for the community to make an informed decision at the election on October 4th.
The League President, Wendy King, said, "The future of our city depends on the generation of children presently in the New Orleans schools. The responsibility for the education of those children will be on the shoulders of this school board. There can be no tolerance for failure to educate our children".
President of the Urban League, Nolan Rollins says, “As stakeholders in the future of education we have a responsibility to leave a legacy of accountability that will guarantee our children access to the American Dream of a quality education.”
“This is a significant opportunity for the people of New Orleans to hear their candidates in an open forum.” said Scott S. Cowen, President, Tulane University. “The role of the Orleans Parish School Board is a very important one and the people elected now will play a large role in the future of this city’s education system.”
We very much look forward to seeing you on September 23 and thank you for your commitment to improving the public education system in New Orleans.
