SUNO School of Social Work offering post-graduate certification for
childhood traumatic stress
NEW ORLEANS, LA - Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) is offering
a certification program to improve clinical services for those working
with children and youth that have experienced trauma from experiences
such as physical and sexual abuse, family violence, community violence
or natural disasters. The program is for master’s degrees recipients
and is being offered from September 2008 until June 2009.
The program is a partnership between the SUNO School of Social Work and
various child-serving agencies. It is designed improve trauma-informed
services and to promote evidence-based interventions for children and
youth experiencing traumatic stress. The program entails two sections,
meeting for two days once a month over a ten-month period.
Program participants will learn:
● The epidemiology of child traumatic stress (e.g., abuse, sexual
abuse, community violence, natural and human-made disasters),
● Evidence-based practice in assessing and treating child
traumatic stress,
● Treatment skills in providing exposure therapy, trauma focused
cognitive behavioral therapy, parent-child interpersonal psychotherapy,
and trauma specific interventions,
● The neurobiology and psychopharmacology in childhood traumatic
stress,
● Learn how to critically assess and evaluate practice
interventions and ethical problems related to child trauma services,
● Policies shaping trauma-informed services and services
integration in systems of care,
● Skills in managing therapy and its stresses,
● Cultural competency skills for practice with diverse families
and organizations and
● Family leadership in working with youth interventions.
Registration for the program is:
● $50 for registration
● $825 for Section I
● $825 for Section II
● Total, $1,700
Limited scholarships available for those with non-profits serving
children in Orleans Parish through the Institute for Mental Hygiene.

experiences. A master’s degree is required for admission.
