Business of Art Summit Promotes Cultural Economy in Louisiana
(Lake Charles)- The cliché, "struggling or starving artists," is true for many in the arts, culture, and entertainment fields. But that doesn't have to be the case. The Business of Art Summit, presented by the Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) at McNeese State University and the Arts and the Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana will teach people with artistic or creative skills how to pursue commercial success. The event will be held on Saturday, May 17 from 9am to 4:30pm at the Lake Charles Boston Academy of Learning, located on 1509 Enterprise Boulevard in Lake Charles. Tom Mouton, Director of the "Louisiana Crossroads Concert Series" on the Louisiana Public Broadcasting channel will serve as Masters of Ceremonies.
The Business of Art Summit is meant for anyone with artistic, cultural, or creative skills from painters, film-makers, performing artists to chefs, historic preservation contractors, and florists. The Summit will offer testimonials from other successful cultural entrepreneurs and break-out sessions on topics such as: Creative Marketing on a Shoestring Budget, the Pros and Cons of Becoming a Non-profit, Recordkeeping: Don't Underestimate the Power of the Manila Folder, and Grants: the 5 Ws of Funding. Cost is $10 including breakfast and lunch with music, an art exhibit, performing artists, and a video presentation. You must pre-register and prepay, by calling (337)439-2787.
The theme for the Business of Art Summit is "As the Cultural Economy Goes, so Goes Louisiana," promoting the creation of an economy based on Louisiana's unique culture. The economic development concept is outlined in a 2005 study called "Louisiana: Where Culture Means Business" from Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu's Office. The study shows how high-paying jobs and successful businesses can be generated from Louisiana's arts communities and by cultural entrepreneurs. The Summit will culminate in a brainstorming session with artists, entrepreneurs, and officials with the Lt. Governor's Office and the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation.
The Business of Art Summit is sponsored by LSBDC at McNeese University, Arts and Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana, the Office of the Lt. Governor, McNeese State University, Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO), and Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation.
