Today, Shepherd released this statement:
I am deeply disappointed and saddened by the indictment against me that has been secured by the federal government. I have never knowingly or maliciously violated any law - parish, state or federal - and I am absolutely not guilty of any criminal offenses.
I am appreciative of all those friends, family and constituents who have said they will pray for me as I go through this terrible and unfair ordeal. It is clear now that my last hope for exoneration lies with our jury system. We in the United States are blessed to have the best legal system in the world and I place my faith in the strengths of that system. My attorney will aggressively present my case and I can only pray that an independent jury of my peers will see the truth.
