Parishioners of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church

Section: Religion

Parishioners of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church invite all suffering New Orleanians, especially those from parishes threatened with closure or suppression by Archbishop Alfred Hughes, to a healing Rosary on Sunday, Nov. 2, 11 a.m., 1307 Louisiana Ave.

Music will be provided by the OLGC Music Ministry, directed by Brian J. Morgan with Soprano Melissa Brocato. Those who attend are asked to bring canned goods for the annual OLGC Thanksgiving basket drive coordinated by their St. Vincent de Paul ministry. There will be no collection, just as there will be no celebrant or Eucharist.

"We refuse to be closed," said Parish President Barbara Fortier. "Though the Archbishop has taken our priest, he cannot take away our faith. We invite all who believe in the miracles of Our Lady to come celebrate with us and pray for the Archbishop's change of heart."

Our Lady of Good Counsel is fighting closure and suppression of its viable Catholic community in Uptown New Orleans. Archbishop Hughes tried locking parishioners out of the church earlier this week and he has reassigned their pastor of eight years, Fr. Pat Collum, to Bogulusa, but the parishioners are staging a 24-hour prayer vigil within the 150-year-old parish. They have filed canonical and civil lawsuits to block the closing.

For more information, call Ms. Fortier at (504) 782-3323. To participate in the vigil, contact Poppy Z. Brite at funkyegret@yahoo.com
